CBSE Class-X Information Technology-Solution Unit-IX (Chapter-19): Part-II

Unit-9 Web Applications and Security
Chapter- 19 Networking Fundamentals
Part-II

IV. Short Answer Questions:
1. What is a computer network?
Answer: A computer network is composed of multiple connected computers that communicate over a wired or wireless medium to share data and other resources.

2. Differentiate between a campus area network and a local area network.
Answer: A campus area network is a network spanning multiple LAN but is smaller than a MAN, like a university network.
LAN is a local area network. It is created in a small office or building.

3. What is a wireless network?
Answer: Wireless networks utilize radio waves and or microwaves to maintain communication channels between computers.

4. What is Wi-Fi?
Answer: Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity. It is the most popular wireless communication protocol used for home, private business LAN and public hotspots.

5. List the advantages of a Wi-Fi network.
Answer:
* It is easier to add or remove computers.
* Wireless network provides more flexibility as the connected computers need not be fixed at a place.
* It is easier to provide connectivity in areas where it is difficult to lay cables.
* Installation can be fast and easy.

6. What is Bluetooth?
Answer: Bluetooth is a wireless protocol used to wirelessly link phones, computers and other network devices over short distances, typically up to 30 feet.

7. How do devices in an infrared network communicate?
Answer: Infrared technology allows computing devices to communicate via short range wireless signals. With infrared, computers can transfer files and other digital data bi-directionally. The infrared transmission technology used in computers is similar to that used in consumer product remote control units like television remote and games remote.

8. Give at least two limitations of a Bluetooth network.
Answer: Bluetooth network limitations:
* It is used for short distance.
* It supports fewer devices.

9. Differentiate between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless networks in terms of their range and speed.
Answer:
Wi-Fi: It is used for wide range. Its speed is more than Bluetooth speed.
Bluetooth: It is used for short distance. Its speed is slower than Wi-Fi speed.

10. What is the limitation of the infrared technology?
Answer: Limitation of infrared technology:
Infrared technology is used for short distance

11. What is the internet?
Answer: Network of networks is called internet. WAN is also called Internet.

12. Name the types of networks on the basis of the area covered by them.
Answer: There are three types of networks on the basis of the area:
* LAN: Local Area Network
* MAN: Metropolitan Area Network
* WAN: Wide Area Network

13. Name the categories of networks on the basis of their functionality.
Answer: Classification of network on the basis of functionality:
1. Peer to Peer network: This type of networks are more commonly used in set ups involving less than ten computers, where strict security is not necessary.
2. Client server network: These networks are more suitable for larger set ups. A central computer, or server acts as the storage location for files and applications shared on the network.

14. Name the categories of networks on the basis of their connection method.
Answer: Network on the basis of their connection:
*Wired: Network that create using wires.
*Wireless: Network that create without wires.

15. Name the communication mediums used in wireless networks.
Answer: Communication mediums used in wireless networks:
* Wi-Fi
* Bluetooth
* Infrared

16. Name the devices required to set up a wireless LAN.
Answer: Devices required to set up a wireless LAN:
* Access point
* Wireless Card

17. How far can a Bluetooth device send signals?
Answer: Bluetooth can send signals up to 30 feet (10 meters).

18. What is the distance range of a Wi-Fi enabled device in open areas?
Answer: In a Wi-Fi network, computers with Wi-Fi network cards connect wirelessly to a wireless router. The router is connected to the internet by means of a modem, typically a cable or a DSL modem. Any user within 200 feet or so of the access point can then connect to the internet, though for good transfer rates, distances of 100 feet.

19. Write the following terms in their full form
a. LAN        b. CAN        c. GAN        d. Wi-Fi        e. Mbps        d. WLAN
Answer:
a. Local Area Network
b. Campus Area Network
c. Global Area Network
d. Wireless fidelity
e. Mega byte per second
d. Wireless Local Area Network

20. What is the need of a computer network?
Answer: Computers have become an integral part of any type of organization, corporate, business, government agency or educational institution. If these computers can be connected and managed properly, many of the overlapping of  doing same task on different computers separately can be avoided. So networks are need for manage all the computers and share information.

21. List any 3 advantages of creating computer networks.
Answer: Advantages:
*Resource sharing
*Communication
* Reliability

22. Discuss the different types of computer networks on the basis of their geographical span.
Answer:
*LAN: Local Area Network is used in a small office.
*MAN: Metropolitan Area Network is used for a city.
*WAN: Wide Area Network is used for wide range like one country to another .
*GAN: Global Area Network is used for different cities.
* SAN: Small Area Network is used to connect servers to data storage devices.
* CAN: Campus area Network is used in a campus like university.
* PAN: Personal area Network is used for short distance like home.

23. List two advantages of wireless networks.
Answer: Advantages of wireless network:
* There is no need of wires
* It is easy to install.

24. List two limitations of wireless networks.
Answer:
* There are greater chances of radio interference due to weather conditions.
* Data transfer rates drop as distance increases.

25. What is a Broadband connection?
Answer: Broadband connections offer another way to connect to the internet. In this category are:
* Cable internet connection
*DSL conncetion
* ADSL

26. What is client server network?
Answer: These networks are more suitable for larger set ups. A central computer, or server, acts as the storage location for files and applications shared on the network.

27. Write the differences between LAN and WAN.
Answer: LAN: Local Area Network is used for office or building.
WAN: Wide Area Network is used for wide area like country to another country.
