Chapter-3 Types of Barriers and Measures to overcome barriers in Effective Communication
A. Answer the following questions.
1. Define communication barrier.
Answer: Noise or disturbance in the process of communication is called communication barrier.
Sometimes because of the lack of skills and knowledge and so many other obstacles, an idea can not be communicated to others, this is called the communication barrier.
Communication barrier is the collective name given to the causes of the loss and distortion of information during the process of communication.
2. Identify the different kinds of barriers.
Answer: Barriers listed below can interfere with an effective message:
1. Intrapersonal Barriers/ Social-Psychological barriers: An individual's in built barriers are known as intrapersonal barriers. It takes place within an individual. Each of us interprets the same message in different ways. Everybody in this world is different from the other. So, all have different psychology, moods, experience, education and personality which may act as a barrier. It includes:
1. Attitude
2. Fear factor
3. Evaluation
4. Wrong assumption
2. Interpersonal Barriers: The barriers which occur due to the inappropriate transmission of words between two or more people are known as interpersonal barriers.
1. Limited vocabulary
2. Emotional outburst
3. Cultural differences
4. Poor listening skills
3. Semantic/ Linguistic Barriers: Semantic is the study of meaning, signs and symbols used for communication. When message written in the form of signs or symbols, it may be communication barrier.
3. Describe the ways to overcome the barriers in communication.
Answer:
1. Overcome intrapersonal Barriers:
i. Don't be overconfident
ii. Be a patient listener
iii. Don't underestimate yourself
iv. Avoid assumption
2. Overcome interpersonal barriers:
i. Enhance vocabulary
ii. Be strong emotionally
iii. Learn the Art of listening
iv. Feedback
3. Overcome semantic barriers:
i. Short and clear message
ii. Language, tone and content of message
iii. Noise
iv. Confidence
v. Improved communication skills
