3. It carries pieces of the message, like a puzzle:
(A) Switch (B) Hub (C) Packet (D) Modem
Answer: (C) Packet

4. This uses a wireless antenna that increases the communication range of the radio signal:
(A) Router (B) Switch (C) Both A & B (D) None of these
Answer: (A) Router

5. An overall design of a computer network is called:
(A) WAN (B) LAN (C) MAN (D) Network architecture
Answer: (D) Network architecture

B. Write TRUE or FALSE
1. A MAN is a network that covers larger area than a LAN.
Answer: TRUE

2. A PAN is a global computer network that spreads across cities, countries or continents.
Answer: FALSE

3. A WAN typically connects devices such as printers, phones, PDAs and laptops.
Answer: FALSE

4. The architecture of a network can be defined as the structure and organization of the company’s hardware and software.
Answer: TRUE

5. Twisted pair cables were invented by Alexander Graham Bell in 1881.
Answer: TRUE

C. Fill in the blanks with the words given below:
(computers, radio, cables, Infrared, waves)
1. There are various types of -------------- that can be used for setting up a network.
Answer: cables

2. In client-server network, several ----------------- called clients (or workstations) are connected to a server.
Answer: computers

3. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are two common technologies that use radio frequency -------------------- to create a network.
Answer: waves

4. Wi-Fi networks use ------------------ waves to provide secure, reliable and faster wireless connectivity.
Answer: radio

5. In 1800, --------------------- waves were discovered by the astronomer William Herschel.
Answer: Infrared

D. Answer these questions:
1. What is a computer network? Define.
Answer: A computer network is a group of computers and other peripheral devices connected together through communication channels (wired or wireless) so that they can share resources, data and information with each other.

2. Write any two advantages of a computer network.
Answer:
Resource sharing (printer, scanner, internet etc.)
Fast communication and data transfer between users

3. What is a modem?
Answer: Modem stands for Modulator-Demodulator. It is a device that converts digital signals into analog signals and vice versa. It helps the computer to connect to the internet.

4. Write a short note on Bluetooth wireless technology and Wi-Fi.
Answer:
Bluetooth is a short-range wireless technology used for connecting devices like headphones, mouse, keyboard, mobile phones etc. within a small area (up to 10 meters).
Wi-Fi is a wireless networking technology that uses radio waves to provide high-speed internet access over a wider area. It is commonly used in homes, schools and offices.

5. Explain bus and star topologies.
Answer:
Bus Topology: All the computers are connected to a single main cable called backbone. Data travels along this cable. It is cheap but if the main cable breaks, the entire network fails.
Star Topology: All computers are connected to a central device (switch or hub). All communication passes through the central device. It is more reliable because failure of one computer does not affect the others.

6. What do you mean by network security? What are the two general levels of network security?
Answer:
Network security is the practice of protecting a computer network and the data traveling on it from unauthorized access, misuse or damage.
The two general levels of network security are:
Physical Security – Protection of hardware devices (servers, routers, cables etc.).
Logical Security – Protection through software measures like firewalls, passwords, antivirus, encryption etc.
