Computer Science
Class-7
Chapter-7 Computer Networking

A. Write T for true or F for false:
1. MAN is generally limited to a geographic area such as a lab, school or building.
Answer: F
2. Each computer in a network is called a node.
Answer: T
3. In LAN, transmission of data in general takes place through satellites.
Answer: F
4. In BUS network topology all the terminals are connected one after another in a straight line.
Answer: T
5. Tree network topology is also known as Hierarchical topology.
Answer: T
6. Mesh network topology has point to point connection between every device in the network.
Answer: T

B. Match the following:
1. BUS                i. Point to Point connection
2. RING            ii. Hierarchical Topology
3. STAR            iii. Terminals are in straight line
4. TREE            iv. Connected to central computer
5. MESH            v. Circular Topology
Answer:
1.    iii.
2.    v.
3.    iv.
4.    ii.
5.    i.

C. Answer the following questions:
1. What is networking?
Answer:  Networking is a vital factor for the successful working of information systems. There are various networking systems. For example, television networks, railway networks, post and telegraph networks and computer networks.

2. Define a computer network.
Answer: Two or more computers connected together through a communication media form a computer network. The computers are connected in a network to exchange information, data and can also use resources of other computer.

3. Write some advantages of connecting computers into a network.
Answer: Advantages of computer network:
1. It allows different users to share the processing characteristics of different computers.
2. It allows users to share common set of data files and software stored in a main system.
3. It allows users to share common hardware resources such as printer, scanners, modem, etc.
4. The cost of computing is reduced to each user as compared to the development and maintenance of each single computer system.

4. Differentiate between LAN and WAN.
Answer: LAN (Local Area Network) is a communication network consisting of many computers, personal computer and workstations that is generally limited to a geographic area such as a lab, school or building.
WAN(Wide Area Network) has connectivity spread over large geographical areas from country to country. The transmission of data in general takes place through satellites.

5. What is network topology?
Answer: A computer or device which is in a network is called a node. The geometrical arrangement of computer resources, remote devices, communication facility is known as network topology. A network can be made in five different topologies:
1. Bus network topology,
2. Ring network topology,
3. Mesh network topology,
4. Star network topology,
5. Tree network topology.
